The classic recipes rank amongst the most beloved drinks in modern history (see: the Kamikaze and the Daiquiri, the Sidecar and the Margarita), and make quite the case for the marriage of citrus and spirits. If you're looking to branch out into other lemon-laced sippers, here are a few more sours to get you started.
2 oz Bourbon
2/3 oz Lemon juice
1 tsp Superfine sugar
1 Maraschino cherry
In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, combine the Bourbon, lemon juice and simple syrup. Shake well and strain into a chilled old-fashioned glass.
Gin Sour
2 oz Gin
1 oz Lemon juice
1/2 tsp Superfine sugar
1 slice Orange
1 Maraschino cherry
In a shaker filled halfway with cracked ice, combine gin, juice, and sugar. Shake vigorously, and strain into a sour of Old-Fashioned glass. Garnish with orange and cherry.
Maiden's Prayer
1 1/2 oz London dry gin
1/2 oz Cointreau
1/2 oz lemon juice
1/2 oz orange juice
Combine all ingredients in a shaker filled with ice. Shake well, strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
The Nugent
2 oz White rum
1/2 oz Lemon juice
1 teaspoon Superfine sugar
1/2 an egg white
Combine all ingredients in a shaker filled with ice. Shake well, strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
