The problem is that your panel judged blancos, reposados as well as anjejos in the same light. That's like taking all the wines in burgundy and judging them. The age of a tequila alters its taste. Were these tequilas made into cocktails or were they sipped? I usually love the information given on this site but shame on you for this one....

I agree. Hard to understand how you can compare a Blanco most likely used for mixing with an Anejo, particularly a super Anejo. Interesting the high number of reposados. After years of insisting on Anejo I am finding my tastes are shifting to the, I think, more distinctive reposados.

I am curious as to why only one of the 4 "Chairman's Trophy" winning tequilas was noted as such in this list. While Cabo Wabo was one of those named, it was not the only one. Also, it was not the highest scoring of all the tequilas, that would go to Olmeca Plata Blanco, also a Chairman's Trophy winner.

They need to try Don Valente tequila. It is the best I have ever had. It would put these Reposado and Anjeo's to shame. It is very very hard to find, but if you find it do yoiurself a favor and get the Anjeo. You will think have died and gone to heaven.

I really like the JLP tequila. It is the best anejo by far for the money. Drink it like scotch on the rocks. You can even find it at Ralphs for under $30 right now.

Great anjeo should be sipped. Ice delutes the product. If you are buying a "good " tequila, you wont find it for under $100..............

I find it interesting that all of the winning Tequila's are of the 100% de Agave class. Maybe this is an issue of judge's education and awareness on the topic, but the best Tequila is always classed as 100% Puro de Agave, with 100% de Agave falling below and de Agave bringing up the lowest classification quality (often times Puro de Agave Tequila's are significantly cheaper than lesser quality spirit, but then the advertisers and marketers need to eat too....). Or, maybe it's an issue of which corporations pay this outfit the most for their samples to be judged? Hmmmmm, maybe there's a fox loose in the Tequila tasting hen house?

The 'Spir.it' credibility is falling fast. I am starting to believe it is just an advertising email we have subscribed to. Each time I read about the Ultimate Beverage Challenge and the results of another tasting....... It falls way short of my experience. It is also nice we are not given any information on who the 20 Tequilas are or how they were judged, and what the qualifications of the judges were. Maybe it is time to unsubscribe.....

Hi all, thanks so much for taking an interest in the site and the UBC challenge. One of the fun things about drinking spirits is the fact that every drinker has his own opinion about flavor preferences, a point that is clearly shown in the great conversation you all have begun here.
Just a quick clarification for any readers wondering, the Ultimate Spirits Challenge is run by a panel of qualified judges headed by Chairman Paul Pacult, well-known spirits educator and journalist, and Assistant Chairman Sean Ludford, editor of BevX online newsletter. The panel tastes the chosen spirits under "ideal clinical conditions" taking temperature and other possible variables into account. More information will be posted on the site over the next few weeks. We also are hoping to bring the judges to the site to join in on your conversations and answer any questions. Keep your eyes peeled!

CABO WABO ???? are you serious ??? I am Mexican, Tequila Drinker, and never seen this anywhere in Mexico (hope I will never see it). this is brand of a 'rock star', that markets only the brand, he must purchase the tequila from a mediocre producer - bottles it and pays a huge amount of $$ to have this kind advertising.
Olmeca and the other 3 brands are just another joke...
Stick to the Herradura, Cuervo Tradicional (not the gold that is sold in the US) and other great tequilas that are only sold in Mexico.

This is all very confusing. Was Partida among the original 20 tequilas you tasted? And if not, why not? I ask because at Paul Pacult's very own Spirit Journal website (June 2011) he gave five stars (highest rank), to Partida Reposado, unequivocally stating: "The finest expression of agave distillate that I've tasted over 21 years of spirits criticism and one of the finest distillates in the world. Elegant and gently sweet, it is every bit as lipsmacking when served neat as it is in margaritas. Partida is in a class by itself in a crowded field of tequilas. It's a no-brainer for me when I'm in a bar and I'm hankering for a margarita and I see Partida Repo on the backbar. That's a true "Eureka!" moment."
That's some assessment. Surely someone with Mr. Pacult's tastbuds—chairing the UBS panels as he does—would speak up at the absence of Partida, after so recently granting it his highest honor. Maybe he did. Perhaps he was not in the group of judges that tasted Partida? Even so, its total shut out seems disrespectful to him... or at the very least, deeply mysterious. It's interesting to read the 2011 Ultimate SPIRITS Challenge results (http://www.ultimate-beverage.com/wi...) where the tequilas are judged by category, unlike they are here, which seems to suggest the Ultimate BEVERAGE Challenge is a hybrid?
