Winter just so happens to be the queen season of citrus. Lemons, grapefruits, tangerines, mandarins, clementines, blood oranges, Meyer lemons and many others all hit their prime between December and March. What does this mean to us waist-whittling devotees? A plethora of fantastic tasting, lower calorie, vitamin C packed libations hitting the scene, making our goals just a bit easier to meet. Need even more motivation? Citrus is not only full of immunity boosting goodness, it is also believed to heighten our metabolisms and provide extra energy for those long mornings and nights spent at the gym.
Balandra
Serving Size: 1Approximate Calorie Count: 190 (lower further by substituting simple syrup with a sugar substitute or decrease the amount of simple syrup by half)
1 3/4 oz Vodka
½ oz Gran Classico Bitter
1 ¼ oz fresh kiwi juice (or 3 ½” slices kiwi)
½ oz simple syrup
¾ oz fresh lemon juice
2 dashes grapefruit bitters
1 swath of pink grapefruit rind
If you do not have a juicer, place kiwi in shaker first and muddle until broken down. Otherwise, add all ingredients and shake over ice for 20 seconds. Fine strain into a rocks glass. Peel the swath over the glass so the grapefruit zest tops the cocktail. Garnish with peel and serve.
