One of my all time favorites. Not sure you need the cherry and the orange peel -- seems like a waste of an orange when you're drinking Manhattans anyway.
Of course, feel free to vary the amount of whiskey and sweet vermouth to taste, and try different types of whiskey and sweet vermouth until you find your taste.

A cherry is enough, not sure about the orange twist either. Various Whiskeys and Vermouth will indeed give you a whole mosaic of flavors. Definitely a classic and an excellent cocktails for people who like whiskey.

Agreed on the orange peel comment as the cherry is enough. A touch less sweet vermouth and made with Basil Hayden made it absolutely perfect.
